Westfield Korean War Memorial
On Veterans Day, November 11, 2004, I officially presented the Korean War Memorial to the town of Westfield in a ceremony of dedication to honor our local Korean War Veterans and the three men from our town who lost their lives in the war. Eight months earlier a complete list of Westfield men who had died did not exist. I chose to correct this, and developed this proposal to build the memorial as the service component of earning my Boy Scout Eagle Badge.
The Memorial is located in Westfield Memorial Park, at the intersection of North Avenue and East Broad Street. The design for the Korean Memorial includes new stairs and pathway leading up the hill to a terraced garden that surrounds the monument. There are three Asian-inspired benches that are placed to provide a view of the memorial area and the town below. The corner is visible at night, lit from the trees above and from uplighting in front and behind the stone.
The monument that I designed features a cutout of the Korean Peninsula in the center of the six-foot tall, one-foot-deep piece of granite. An inscription to Korean War Veterans and the names of our residents who died are carved into the front face. They are Marine Private First Class Griswold Hill, Army Lt. Charles A. Lipphardt,Army Private First Class Richard R. Wilson.
Local businesses, foundations, organizations, clubs, individuals, and government offices have donated approximately $50,000 in goods and services to make this project a reality. Thank you to everyone who generously shared their expertise, time, and resources to make this project and dedication ceremony a reality. The participation of our entire community has been an inspiration to me.

Westfield Cares
(a program enthusiastically endorsed by the Downtown Westfield Corporation)
On Tuesday, September 11, 2001 tragedy struck our nation and nine of our Westfield families when the World Trade Center was attacked and destroyed. All Americans have grieved and shared in the pain and devastating loss of over 5,000 lives.
In response to the outpouring of concern and support for our area families our business community has organized WESTFIELD CARES to assist them. WESTFIELD CARES enables businesses to make tax-deductible contributions of their goods and services to these families via the Westfield Downtown Committee, a charitable 501c3 corporation since 1992. class = "small">
