As this holiday season approaches, the savvy shopper will be even more cognizant of selecting a gift that is not only financially sound, but is exciting and enduring as well. A gift of participation in the arts allows the recipient, of any age, to acquire a new skill or continue to develop an existing talent.
The New Jersey Workshop for the Arts can assist the gift giver to make a wise decision regarding that special holiday purchase, without the usual confusion over appropriate colors, sizes or styles. The NJWA will issue a gift certificate in any financial amount that can be used for any of its varied programs.
The NJWA Music Studio offers vocal and instrumental lessons for both children and adults. Youngsters may also select to enroll in group piano, guitar or vocal lessons. A 4 or 5 year old child may enjoy participating in Kids ‘n’ Arts, where children experience art, music and theater crafts.
Perhaps the recipient of this gift certificate will have an interest in joining the Westfield Fencing Club, which offers lessons in saber, foil and epee. These classes are designed for both children, ages 10 and older, and for adults.
The gift certificate can be used toward tuition for the Westfield Summer Workshop, a program of arts, crafts, communications, dance, drama, music and special interests for students in pre-school to grade 8. The WSW program also includes a major musical theater production for aspiring actors in grades 6 through 12.
Another way in which the certificate can be used is toward a purchase at the NJWA Music Store, if the receiver is interested in instruments or other musical inventory.
Make your holidays a more meaningful experience, one that shows your thoughtfulness. To purchase a gift certificate, phone 908-789-9696, visit the NJWA studios at 150-152 East Broad Street in Westfield or log on to www.njworkshopforthearts.com for information about all NJWA programs.

The DWC thanks all of the downtown businesses who provided the candy and prizes and the volunteers who assisted with judging all of the costumes and awarded the prizes. According to Sherry Cronin, Executive Director “This annual event has grown each year in popularity and we couldn’t do it without great support of the business community and our judges who volunteer. This event draws visitors from a wide area to visit our downtown too.” Volunteer judges included: Dee Murley of Xocolatz, Millicent Brody, Jamie Lemberg, Peg Lockwood, Lee Corcoran, Barry Corcoran, Carole Leone, Nancy Trippe, Dea Lenihan, Brendan Lenihan, Daniel Cronin, Richard Edge, Lily Suda, Sophie Greene, Colleen Verdic, Caroline Verdic, and Nicole Notar.
The DWC appreciates the support of the community and looks forward to another successful event next year.

The year was 1934: America was in the midst of "The Great Depression," Good Bye, Mr. Chips topped the bestseller lists, and paperback books were still on the horizon when The Town Book Store opened its doors on East Broad Street in Westfield. Today, websites and "big box" stores dominate the retail landscape, "virtual" books can be read digitally, and another economic crisis is gripping the nation. But through it all, The Town Book Store is still going strong in downtown Westfield.
This November, The Town Book Store will celebrate 75 years of good, old-fashioned bookselling with a month of raffles, giveaways, and author signings to mark its diamond anniversary. The last independent bookstore in Union County according to the American Booksellers Association, the shop has been serving Westfield and neighboring communities through three-quarters of a century, six owners and two locations.
"In today's rapidly changing retail environment, The Town Book Store remains one constant where shoppers can find a first-rate literary selection with friendly, personalized service in an attractive, convenient setting," says Anne Laird, the store's current owner and herself a native Westfielder. "For this little gem of a store to be celebrating its diamond anniversary is truly a testimony to the loyal customers who have supported us for so many years. This celebration is our way of saying a heartfelt, 'Thanks.'"
According to the original business ledgers on display in the shop, The Town Book Store first opened its doors on September 4, 1934. After operating from the same address for 72 years, the store relocated across the street in 2007 to 270 E. Broad Street, the site of Westfield's first library. The new location at the eastern gateway to Westfield's vibrant downtown offers easier parking, ample window space and greater visibility for the store. A signboard inviting customers to "Nurture Your Community: Shop Local," has garnered positive reaction from shoppers.
Though modest in size, the store's inventory is well-edited and caters to the interests of its customers. Individualized services like fast turnaround on special orders, friendly, helpful staff, author signings, out-of-print book searches, book club discounts, and free gift wrapping are part of the shop's appeal. And while occasional blockbusters like the Harry Potter series and Dan Brown's latest have been a boon to struggling booksellers, Ms. Laird says it is avid readers and parents with young children who have been the store's mainstay throughout the years.
The November celebration comes just as the store is stocking up for the holiday season. Among the special giveaways Ms. Laird has planned are many items donated by publishers, including a "Diary of Wimpy Kid" bundle with a T-shirt, life-size cutout and a copy of the latest book. Customers are invited to stop by the store to enter drawings throughout the month and peruse the holiday selection. For store hours and directions, please contact The Town Book Store at (908) 233-3535 or visit their website at www.townbookstore.com

The Coffee With Conscience Concert Series continues its TENTH SEASON by presenting the powerful Melissa Ferrick, in concert at the First United Methodist Church, 1 East Broad Street (corner of North Avenue) in Westfield, on Saturday, November 21st. Doors will open at 7:30 PM and the concert begins at 8 PM. Admission is $18.00 on line and $23.00 at the door.
This concert will benefit the Plainfield Chapter of Habitat for Humanity. Advance purchase of tickets is highly recommended by going to melissaferrick2.eventbrite.com
A veteran of the acoustic narrative tradition, Ferrick's musical journey actually started in a different vein - as a brass musician. After studying horn music at the renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston, Mass., Ferrick set out on her own. But her instrument focus had changed. Rather than pursue a career as a flugelhorn musician, she turned to the acoustic guitar.
In 1991, she landed a last-second addition as a support act for Morrissey. This first big break not only led to more dates with the popular British rock crooner, but also laid the foundation for Ferrick's reputation as a dynamic live act. A recording contract with Atlantic Records followed in 1993, as did her debut album, "Massive Blur." The album garnered glowing reviews, as did her sophomore effort two years later, "Willing to Wait." Although she enjoyed success with Atlantic, Ferrick elected to go in another direction in the wake of "Willing to Wait." She released five studio albums and four live albums as an Indie artist over the next 12 years. Her second live album during this period, "Live at the B.P.C." (2000), marked the first release on her personal label, Right On Records.
For more info about this concert and the featured artist, please visit melissaferrick2.eventbrite.com
The Coffee With Conscience Concert Series is a ten-show series running from September through June at the First United Methodist Church of Westfield. The Series supports the following charities: Contact We Care (Westfield), Homefirst (Plainfield), Habitat for Humanity (Plainfield), the Community Food Bank of NJ (Hilside) and the Keith Knost Special Needs Trust (Mountainside). Each beneficiary has two concerts dedicated to it during the season.
The Coffee With Conscience Concert Series is made possible in part by a generous grant from the Westfield Service League, and other private donations – which are enthusiastically encouraged.

In a great act of hope, the parents give birth to a "replacement child," born to heal wounds and provide a "salve for the burns." This child was Judy Mandel, and this is the story behind the 1952 plane crash in Elizabeth, New Jersey.
When Judy finally learns of this story, years later, she begins to uncover the complex and painful layers of her family and the relationships with her parents, and sister. It isn't until Judy has a child of her own that she truly understands the sacrifice, the pain, and the truth.
A story of love and transformation, Replacement Child reveals the everyday realities behind so many tragic headlines, as you follow one woman's brave path to recovery-sometimes through laughter, sometimes through tears-as she embraces the love that allows her to finally forgive. Replacement Child is not only a story of heartbreak, and survival, but a lesson to us all about the brevity of life and the power of love.

The Music Connection, an instrumental music program for special needs families, is currently interviewing and placing students in this innovative program of the New Jersey Workshop for the Arts.
Potential candidates, ages 6 and older with neurological, developmental and/ or physical handicaps, will be interviewed and evaluated for admission to study violin, viola, trumpet, piano, clarinet, alto sax, oboe or snare drum.
Students must have a Music Partner who will attend all lessons and practice with them.
Although there is no tuition for the student, parents must pay an adjusted fee. The NJWA will loan band and orchestral instruments to the students at no cost, but parents will be charged a reduced fee.
Due to present financial restrictions, placement in the program is limited. However, the NJWA is seeking individual or corporate sponsors so that it can continue providing this service and possibly expand the Music Connection to include more families.
The Music Connection will be held at the NJWA studios at 150-152 East Broad Street, Westfield. Please call Dr. Ted Schlosberg at 908-789-9696 for a brochure or more information.

AIB is a national campaign and contest that promotes enhancing communities through beautification. In the friendly competition, communities are matched by population and evaluated on their efforts related to floral displays, urban forestry, landscaped areas, turf and groundcover, tidiness, environmental awareness, heritage conservation, and community involvement. Judges visited Westfield in early July.
Among 25 towns in the United States, Westfield was one of three finalists in two of the eight criteria: Floral Displays and Urban Forestry with the winning towns being Greendale, Indiana and Milwaukee, Wisconsin respectively. Westfield also received a four-bloom rating out of a possible five-bloom rating in recognition of its floral displays. Westfield followed second in the population category with Collierville, Tennessee winning the top prize in the 20,001 to 50,000 population category. In addition, Westfield?s efforts were mentioned many times in a new edition of America in Bloom's Best Ideas book published in September 2009.
'Westfield in Bloom' was the name of the local program during the America in Bloom competition held during the spring and summer. Through this effort co-lead by Sherry Cronin, Executive Director, Downtown Westfield Corporation and Dave Williams of Williams Nursery, many town departments, organizations, businesses and residents joined the committee and continue to be part of an ongoing effort. A WestfieldinBloom.com blog was created by Dave Williams to garner support for the Westfield in Bloom program.
"We were pleased to receive this recognition. America in Bloom officials and judges said that Westfield scored extremely well especially for a first year community." stated Sherry Cronin. Dave Williams added "We are looking forward to sharing the detailed report and judge's recommendations with the Town and committee and to garner support to compete again next year." Westfield received a total of 859 points of the possible 1000 points across the eight criteria.
America in Bloom is an independent, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization encouraging nationwide beautification programs, personal and community involvement, educational programs and the challenge of a friendly competition among participating communities across the country. To date, more than 170 communities in 38 states have participated in the AIB program.
