Hip Thrift & Art Gallery Opens on South Avenue

Do you like garage sales? A used bargain is always on hand at Hip Thrift & Art Gallery, a new thrift store that just opened at 407 South Ave. West.

Owner Patrice Baros, a Westfield native and Westfield High School graduate, says she always wanted to do something creative. "I like buying, but don't want to collect anymore", said Patrice. "I want to recycle, and I like a good value and the scavenger part of finding it."

Hip Thrift sells second-hand and vintage clothing (women, men, and children) and collectibles, including shoes, household, pet, garden, and sport items, cookbooks, dishes, objects d'art, small furniture, office supplies, jewelry, etc. When I stopped in just before their opening, I saw an array of clothing, vintage woven quilts and lots of hats and handbags.  Owner Patrice also said she plans to sell original art by local painters.

Donations are always welcome and appreciated. If you clean out your closets or have yard sale leftovers, Patrice will gladly pick up. Or you can simply drop off a box. She also assures that she will find a home for whatever she does not use. She prefers no toys or glasses. While she cannot give you a receipt because she is not a non-profit, she plans to donate a % of her proceeds to animal rescue -- The Plainfield Area Humane Society and Safe Haven Rabbit Rescue, Inc.

Stop in to find inexpensive, pre-owned goods!

Something Good Has Arrived… Alan’s Orchard Opens in Westfield at 102 Quimby Street

By Jamie Lemberg

August 27, 2010 -- Can’t get to the Union Square market in NYC? Don’t fret. Alan Weinberg, a Westield NJ resident, has decided to pursue his passion for locally grown, fresh farmed foods and bring them to us.

The idea behind Alan’s Orchard is simple:  They sell locally farmed and certified organic produce, responsibly raised free-range poultry and grass-fed beef, local artisanal cheeses and other dairy products, breads, sauces, jams, frozen yogurt with Jersey fresh toppings, and other locally sourced products.  Their products are for people who want high quality, better tasting, local, fresh food and are concerned about the health of our planet. They would like you to think of them as a really great farmer’s market, with more convenient hours and a roof overhead.

Alan features some of the same farmers who sell their fresh food at Union Square. He features Griggstown Quail Farm in Princeton NJ, Valley Shepherd Creamery in Long Valley, NJ, Cherry Grove Farm in Princeton, NJ, Natural By Nature in Lancaster County, PA, Baker's Bounty in Linden, NJ and many others.  A complete list of artisans and farmers is available on his website www.alansorchard.com

Orchard’s Alan, who has lived in Westfield for eight years, said he “always wanted to run [his] own business.” His store will try to recreate a “European Market” or “New York Green Market” atmosphere, according to the owner.

At a recent tasting, my colleagues and I sampled an array of fabulous cheeses, from mild to strong, many from Valley Shepherd Creamery; multigrain baguettes and whole wheat walnut raisin loafs from Baker's Bounty in Linden, NJ; delicious home made blueberry and apple pies as well as a fantastic, savory turkey pot pie from Griggstown Quail Farm in Princeton NJ. These pot pies were the hit of the event, made with the farm’s own fresh vegetables and turkey surrounded by the just the right amount of seasonings and gravy in a buttery, flakey home baked pastry shell. Griggstown Quail Farm also makes these delicious pot pies with chicken and beef.

We sampled as well the fresh, 1% low-fat, all natural frozen yogurt, original flavor, which is made with actual organic yogurt. It was fresh tasting and tart (in the style of Red Mango or Pinkberry) and is sold soft serve with fresh fruit, granola and honey toppings. It is a welcome addition to places offering desserts in Downtown Westfield.

We are so excited that the store has opened so we can buy the pot pies, fresh bread, fresh peaches and pies for our families, or simply to stroll in one evening for some frozen yogurt. You won’t want to miss it!

It's all about Shopping at Sadie...a Proper Women's Clothing Store
Sadie_article_by_milli_medium

by Millicent K. Brody

writer - photographer

I’m all about clothing,” said Westfield resident Regina St. Lifer,  who with her husband James owns Sadie, “a proper lady’s shop” on Prospect Street in Westfield.

Describing herself as an “old soul” with a huge heart, the St. Lifers’ grew up in the garment center of Manhattan. Raised among the racks of the retail trade, Regina loves to tell stories of her mother Ruth who would literally drag her to Union Square to “Shop”!

“We’d visit the famous “Back Rooms” of S. Klein’s on the Square, Ohrbachs on 34th Street, and Mays on Broadway and 14th Street. Standing 5 ft. 9 1n., in her stocking feet, my mom would try on a variety of garments, then one-by-one, take them off, and drop them anywhere. My job was to retrieve each outfit, and carefully replace it on the correct hanger.

Honing her merchandizing skills at ‘Little Impostors’ a children’s clothing store in Maplewood, she then moved to Livingston and opened ‘Basically Kids’. Shoppers would head there for her specially designed tie-die batik children’s clothing.

“I’ve been a stylist, buyer, wholesaler, and retailer,” she continued. “I’ve always thought about opening a special place for women,” she says. “I’ve kept my eye on a certain small shop on Prospect Street. As soon as it became available, I moved right in. We named our shop Sadie after James’ great aunt who never had a bad word to say about anyone. Owning Sadie allows me the freedom to practice what I love--dressing women of all different sizes and shapes. My goal is to help women feel beautiful about themselves.”  Regina believes women should not dress like their daughters. They should dress appropriately for their age, and leave something to the imagination.

Embracing ‘old world style and service is what Sadie is all about.  Think Sophia Loren, Marilyn Monroe, and the popular actress, Eva Mendes. ““You’ll find that my clothing fits tremendously well. I feature what I believe will make women look and feel their best. Selections are edited with a great deal of thought.”   “When women open their closet door in search of what to wear, I want them to feel secure in knowing that every garment hanging in that space, can go anywhere. Before I purchase any clothing for Sadie, I take time to try-on each garment. If it passes over my curves, and allows for movement, I am pleased. If my customers choose their wardrobes with care, they too will be equally pleased.”

“Wear your clothes,” she adds. “Don’t wait for that special occasion. Make a special occasion out of each and every day. Remember, people look at you differently when you present yourself in a special way,” she quips. “Embrace your age with wisdom, knowledge, and security. Know who you are! Whether you’re a size 2 or size 14, know and believe that you are beautiful.”

“I want all of my customers to feel good about shopping at Sadie.  “Believe it or not, we’re all little girls. We like hearing we look beautiful, for we are all beautiful. I want women to feel good about themselves.”

World Music in Westfield, June 12

The Coffee With Conscience Concert Series wraps up its TENTH SEASON by presenting World Folk-Pop group, the Guy Mendilow Band at the First United Methodist Church, 1 East Broad Street (corner of North Avenue) in Westfield, on Saturday, June 12th. Doors will open at 7:30 PM and the concert begins at 8 PM. Admission is $19.00 on line and $23.00 at the door.

This concert is the Tenth Season Finale and Ice Cream Social, with Gelato donated by Ciao Bella. Advance purchase of tickets is highly recommended by going to www.guymendilow.eventbrite.com/

To Guy Mendilow the music cannot be separated from the message, whether you are part of the audience at Bethlehem Musikfest, New York’s Tribeca Performing Arts Center, in a master workshop with government education ministers from Palestine, Israel, Jordan or Lebanon, or swapping songs between Ladysmith Black Mambazo and the 26 diverse young people in the American Boychoir — Mendilow’s first touring experience. The Guy Mendilow Band continues to blur musical boundaries and offers its modest contributions to today’s larger peace puzzle: by creating person to person connections, one song at a time.

Splash Opens with Haute Ambitions
Splash_interior_medium

May 17, 2010 -- Westfield, New Jersey is fast becoming a boutique mecca as another fashion retailer joins the growing roster. Splash, an upscale European designer clothing boutique, has opened in the heart of the downtown shopping district at 15 E. Broad St.

Owned by married couple Ohla Yykhopen & David Wasitowski, hailing from the Ukraine, Splash brings a European sensibility to Westfield. They offer designer dresses for special events, evening wear, and high end designer sportswear. Some of their remarkable collections include RED Valentino from Italy, CLASS by Roberto Cavalli, CELYN b. from Italy, Scervino Street from Italy, Betty Blue and several others. For more casual sportswear, try the J Brand Jeans, made in the USA.

While the merchandise and décor is upscale, the atmosphere and service are not intimidating. Ohla and her staff are friendly and approachable and will welcome you with relaxed smiles. You can feel free to browse without pressure.

This is not the kind of place you visit for casual attire you might wear to a soccer game with flip flops. But if you have a luncheon, charity event, wedding or other glamorous party to host or attend, you won’t need to drive to the Short Hills Mall for some ultra high end choices.

Westfield is surely enhanced by this elegant shop and you will be too. Stop in to take a peak and scope out some favorites for your next occasion.

Be Part of Westfield in Bloom
Westfield_in_bloom_-downtown_planter_2009_medium

The Town of Westfield is gearing up for the second annual “America in Bloom” competition.  Co-leading the efforts are the Downtown Westfield Corporation (DWC) and Williams Nursery.  Working together, their focus is the 2010 America in Bloom award.

Nationwide, Westfield is among 28 towns to compete this year.  Westfield has the distinction of being the only town in the state of New Jersey to participate in the 2009 and 2010 competitions.

A team effort, the Downtown Westfield Corporation and Williams Nursery are working in concert with the Town of Westfield and its residents, as well as local businesses and organizations to hopefully garner the grand prize. Along with an array of colorful hanging flower baskets, decorative planters containing an assortment of flowers will be adorning storefronts, restaurants and shops in the downtown district.  As patrons and visitors drive through our town, beautiful flowering baskets will be installed on the historic utility poles.

Be sure to welcome America in Bloom judges, Bruce Riggs and Marlboro Packard as they travel around Westfield on July 12 and 13 viewing and critiquing our various landscapes, homes, business fronts, schools, houses of worships, parks and recreational facilities.   Final results will be announced in October at the national symposium.  In 2009, Westfield received a four-bloom rating out of a possible five bloom rating (a significant achievement for a first-year competing community) and special mention for the Floral Displays category.

Be a part of Westfield in Bloom.  Volunteer and participate by submitting stories and photos of your Westfield residence or businesses.  Let us know about your outdoor beautification efforts.  Contact Sherry Cronin at the DWC or Dave Williams at Williams Nursery at info@westfieldinbloom.com. To inquire about the national program, contact America in Bloom at 614-487-1117 or visit www.americainbloom.org.

The Bath Junkie and The Farmhouse Store teamed up at the 2010 Spring Fling in Downtown Westfield.  Owners Katie Cantor of The Bath Junkie and Ed Menapace of The Farmhouse Store along with their dedicated staffs braved the inclement weather to display some of their unique products.  The Bath Junkie opened in the space previously occupied by The Farmhouse Store at 221 North Avenue E.  Coincidentally, The Farmhouse Store moved to larger space at 221 E. Broad Street.  Both businesses report strong sales – a result of the kind of partnerships and community involvement they embrace!

D & G Gift Gallery Specializes in Special Gifts
D_g_from_milli_-_cropped_vertical_medium

by Millicent K. Brody  -- Bridgewater resident Helder Belo opened D & G Gallery on Central Avenue in Westfield, on December 3, 2009. After surviving a frigid winter of snow and ice, customers have discovered D & G Gallery is the perfect place to purchase that special gift for someone really special...or frankly gift themselves with a treasure they’ve always admired.

Crediting his wife Carla a jewelry designer, for creating the stunning interior, the typical Soho gallery boasts walls and shelves brimming with stainless steel and sterling silver.  “We’re highlighting quality gift items from the United States and Europe,“ said Belo. “We’re focused on what the family of today wants to showcase in their home. We feature limited editions of the Starwars characters: Darth Vader, Boba Fett, R2-D2 and C3-PO. We also carry an array of sculptured horses, airplanes and automobiles. You’ll love our crystal vases, stunning pitchers, interesting bowls and candlesticks. "

Gift the bride and groom with a lovely decanter set replete with six glasses. Select darling turtles, and lady bugs created with Murano glass and stainless steel. Choose gorgeous handmade articles made with pure horns. Arriving in natural colors and shapes, choose beautiful bowls and fill them with your favorite food. There are even shelves of baby treasures which will delight moms, dads, and their little ones.

Brides and future brides plan to attend the D & G Gallery Bridal Registry. Taking place, Sunday, April 25th, select gorgeous silver, pewter, and crystal picture frames. Peruse the Mary Jurek collection. From handmade stainless steel tableware, cake plates, and boxed wedding sets of a beautiful spatula and knife, choose another set to gift a special friend. You might even find an interesting piece of jewelry to wear around your neck, on your finger, or your wrist. Coffee, donuts, and custard cupcakes will be served.

Any questions? Contact Helder Belo. He’ll be happy to assist with your every need.

April 2010 Author Signings at Town Book Store
Town_book_store_-_lovable_me_medium

Renee Gatz, April 10th from 11-1 PM Wise Words & Witty Expressions

Wise Words & Witty Expressions is a collection of expressions--profound, funny and even sarcastic--said to the author, Renee' Gatz, by her parents growing up to help her navigate her way through life's ups and downs.  As a child, Gatz would roll her eyes when she heard these expressions and as an adult she was horrified when she found herself saying them herself. As she grew though, she began to appreciate the value of these expressions and their ability to help her understand, laugh and even survive.

Josie Varga, April 17th from 2-4 PM Visits From Heaven

Westfield resident, Josie Varga has assembled an incomparable collection of what she terms "visits from heaven" from around the globe and backed up by testimony from some of the world's leading experts on afterlife communication. This groundbreaking book will lead you to question your own mortality with the realization that we are all eternal energy beings, and energy can neither be created nor destroyed. When you reach the end of this book, you will find that the most prudent explanation is that there is nothing final about death. You always were and you always will be.

Sue Anderson, April 24th from 2-4 PM You're Lovable to Me

Through the eyes of a bunny family, author Kat Yeh and illustrator Sue Anderson introduce families to a heartwarming tale that is sure to touch readers of all ages. You're Lovable to Me is the perfect bedtime story bringing families together to learn about the power and simplicity of unconditional love. Through the use of gentle rhyme and classic illustrations; this is a classic tale of love that can be shared with all generations

Edie Isoldi is living her dream. As the owner of Bittersweet Design, a great "secret shop" on Lenox Avenue, she is having the time of her life. Visitors entering the bustling shop get a rush of excitement. Floors, corners, shelves and cubbies are filled with trendy jewelry, handbags, wallets, lovely pins, pill boxes, business card holders, picture frames, bracelets, stunning scarves, belts, beautiful gifts for the home, and a thousand and one other fabulous things you not only want, you actually believe you have to have.

Think trendy pearls! You'll find reams of bracelets, necklaces rings, and earrings in colors of black, pink, soft white, and even gold pearls. "We're carrying a line of linen and leather bags in colorful print colors," said the owner. We also carry a plethora of handbags in every style and color to fit every price point."

Literally born to shop, Edie made the decision to own a shop filed with fashion-forward merchandise. After scouting the area, her son Frank D., a realtor with Coldwell Banker, found her the perfect location. "I signed the lease, and hit the road shopping," she continued. "New merchandise comes in every day. At Bittersweet Design, we like to think we have the perfect gift to suit any and all occasions."

From fabulous shawls, and wallets, to teeny reading glasses, to designer belts to suit ever area of our wardrobe, to candles, and decorative rings, it's all there. Fans of sunflowers are able to purchase decorative pillows in cranberry red blazing with gorgeous yellow blooms. You'll also like the array of Mariposa silver plates carved in sunflower designs. They're the perfect answer to decorative serving pieces for sandwiches and sweet treats. The 9th annual Downtown Westfield 5K & Pizza Extravaganza will be held on July 21, 2010 with a start time of 7:00 pm.  This year for the first time, the race will be pre-registration only by July 17. All on-line registrations close at midnight on July 17, and all mailed entries must be postmarked by July 15. T-shirts and d-tag pick up can be picked up as early as 5:00 pm on race day.

This event, which is one of the largest non-corporate 5K in the state, attracted over 2,500 runners and over 6,000 spectators last year for an evening of running, pizza, prizes, and entertainment.  According to Sherry Cronin, Executive Director of Downtown Westfield Corporation, “The event has become well known as the ‘pizza run’ and is a great way to showcase the business community and surrounding neighborhoods.  Given the popularity of the event, we decided to make it pre-registration only this year.  Last year, almost a third of the runners registered on the night of the event making it challenging to register everyone and start the event on time. Mark Zenobia of On Your Mark Productions does a great job in directing the event and has recommended pre-registration only and introducing new ChronoTrack d-tag scoring.”

Trinitas Regional Medical Center is the 2010 Platinum Sponsor of the event, the first one in the nine-year history of the race.  So far, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey has returned with a silver sponsorship. Overlook Hospital and Westfield Pediatric Dental Group have returned with bronze sponsorships. PSE&G and State Farm Insurance Christine Consenza Agency are contributing sponsors.  Creative Dental Care has returned with a supporting sponsorship.  According to Beth Brenner, Assistant Executive Director of Downtown Westfield Corporation, “We are thrilled with the level of enthusiasm expressed by sponsors so far and have a goal to hopefully make a small profit on the event this year.  We expect many other sponsors to join this elite group.  Any proceeds would be earmarked for downtown streetscape improvements.”

The race will be held on the USATF certified course for the following route: On E. Broad Street Left onto N. Euclid Avenue, Left onto Park Drive through Mindowaskin Park, Cross Mountain Avenue, Right onto Lawrence Avenue, Left onto Sylvania Place, Right onto Elm Street, Left onto Newton Place, Right onto Prospect Street, Left onto Brightwood Avenue, Left onto Embree Crescent, Left onto Eaglecroft Road, Right onto Clark Street, Left onto W. Dudley Avenue, Right onto Elm Street, and Finish just past E. Broad Street.  Pizza and dessert will be provided to all registered runners. Entertainment will be provided by the ever-popular Michael Craig Band with an awards ceremony immediately following the race.   Register by mail or online at www.PracticeHard.com.  Technical t-shirts will be provided to the first 2,000 entrants.  Embroidered caps will be provided to the first 600 entrants.
